Taro Urashima（浦島太郎）

Once upon a time, in a small village by the sea（昔々、海辺の小さな村に）, there lived a kind young man named Urashima Taro（浦島太郎という親切な若者が住んでいました）.
He loved to help people and animals（彼は人々や動物を助けるのが大好きでした）.
One day（ある日）, as he was walking along the beach（彼が浜辺を歩いていると）, he saw some children hurting a small turtle（子供たちが小さな亀をいじめているのを見ました）.
The children were poking the turtle with sticks（子供たちは棒で亀をつついて） and laughing（笑っていました）.

“Stop that!” Taro shouted（「やめなさい！」と太郎は叫びました）.
He ran to the children（彼は子供たちのところへ駆け寄り）and told them to leave the turtle alone（亀を放っておくように言いました）.
The children ran away（子供たちは逃げ出し）and Taro gently picked up the turtle.（太郎は優しく亀を拾い上げました）.
“Don’t worry, little turtle（大丈夫だよ、小さな亀さん）. You’re safe now,” he said（「もう安全だよ」と彼は言いました）.
Taro took the turtle to the sea（太郎は亀を海まで連れて行き）and set it free in the water（海に放しました）.

The next day, while Taro was fishing by the sea（次の日、太郎が海で釣りをしていると）, the same turtle came to him（あの亀が彼のところにやってきました）.
But this time（しかし、今度は）, the turtle was much bigger!（その亀がとても大きくなっていました！）
It could even talk!（それに、話すこともできました！）

“Thank you for saving me”（「助けてくれてありがとう」）the turtle said（と亀が言いました）.
“I am a magical turtle（「私は魔法の亀です）. I want to take you to the Dragon Palace under the sea（海底の竜宮城へお連れしたいのです） as a reward for your kindness（あなたの親切に報いるために）. Will you come with me?”（一緒に来てくれますか？」）

Taro was very surprised（太郎はとても驚きましたが）, but he agreed（承諾しました）.
He held onto the turtle’s back（彼は亀の背中につかまり）, and they swam deep into the ocean（海の奥深くまで泳いで行きました）.
The water was clear and blue（水は澄んで青く）, and colorful fish swam all around them（カラフルな魚たちが彼らの周りを泳いでいました）.
After a while（しばらくすると）, they arrived at the Dragon Palace（彼らは竜宮城に着きました）.
It was the most beautiful place（それは最も美しい場所でした）Taro had ever seen（今までに見た中で）.

The palace was made of bright coral, shiny pearl（宮殿は明るいサンゴ、輝く真珠）, and sparkling gems（そしてきらめく宝石でできていました）.

At the entrance（入口で）, a beautiful princess named Otohime greeted Taro（乙姫という美しい姫が太郎を迎えました）.
“Welcome to the Dragon Palace, Urashima Taro!” （「竜宮城へようこそ、浦島太郎！」） she said with a warm smile（と彼女は優しい笑顔で言いました）.
“Thank you for saving the turtle（「亀を助けてくれてありがとう」）. Please, stay and enjoy our palace.”（「どうぞここで楽しい時間を過ごしてください」）

For many days（何日も）, Taro stayed at the Dragon Palace（太郎は竜宮城で過ごしました）.
He ate delicious food（彼は美味しい食事を楽しみ）, watched fish dance, and listened to wonderful music（魚たちの踊りを見て、素晴らしい音楽を聞きました）.
Every day felt like a dream（毎日が夢のようで）, and time passed quickly（時間があっという間に過ぎていきました）.
Taro was very happy, but after a while（太郎はとても幸せでしたが、しばらくすると）, he started to miss his family and village（家族や村が恋しくなりました）.

“I have had a wonderful time here（ここで素晴らしい時間を過ごしましたが）, but I miss my home,” Taro said to Princess Otohime（「家が恋しいです」と太郎は乙姫に言いました）.

The princess smiled kindly（乙姫は優しく微笑みました）.

“I understand,” she said（「分かります」と彼女は言いました）.
“Before you go（「帰る前に」）, please take this box called a ‘tamatebako’（「この『玉手箱』という箱を持って行ってください」）It is a gift for you（「これはあなたへの贈り物です」）, but remember, do not open it（「しかし、覚えておいてください。この箱は決して開けてはいけません」）. No matter what happens, never open this box.”（「何があっても絶対に開けないでください」）

Taro thanked the princess（太郎は姫に感謝し）, took the box, and climbed onto the turtle’s back（その箱を受け取って亀の背中に乗りました）.
The turtle swam up, up, up（亀は上へ、上へと泳ぎ）, and soon they were back at the shore（やがて彼らは岸に戻りました）.
Taro thanked the turtle again（太郎はもう一度亀に感謝し）and waved goodbye as it disappeared into the sea（亀が海に消えていくのを見送りました）.

Taro felt happy to be home（太郎は家に帰れて嬉しかったですが）, but something was strange（何かが変でした）.
His village looked different（彼の村が違って見えました）.
The houses had changed（家々も変わり）, and the people looked unfamiliar（人々も見知らぬ顔でした）.
Taro looked around （太郎は辺りを見回して）and realized he didn’t recognize anyone（誰も知らない人ばかりだと気付きました）.
He asked a few people if they knew a man named Urashima Taro（彼は何人かの人に「浦島太郎という人を知っていますか」と尋ねましたが）, but no one did（誰も知りませんでした）.

Taro felt confused and sad（太郎は困惑し、悲しくなりました）.
“What happened?” he wondered（「何が起こったんだろう？」と彼は考えました）.
“How long was I in the Dragon Palace?”（「竜宮城にどれくらい長くいたんだろう？」）

Suddenly（突然）, he remembered the box that Princess Otohime had given him（彼は乙姫がくれた箱のことを思い出しました）.
“Maybe the answer is inside this box”（「もしかしたら答えはこの箱の中にあるかもしれない」）, he thought（と彼は考えました）.
Even though the princess told him not to open it（姫は開けてはいけないと言っていたのに）, Taro was curious（太郎は好奇心が湧いてきました）.
He slowly opened the box（彼はゆっくりと箱を開けました）, and a puff of white smoke came out（すると白い煙がふわっと出てきました）.
As the smoke surrounded him（煙に包まれると）, Taro felt his body become heavy（太郎は体が重くなるのを感じました）.
His hair turned gray（彼の髪は白髪になり）, his skin wrinkled, and he became very old（肌にはしわができ、彼はとても年老いてしまいました）.

Taro realized（太郎は気付きました） that many, many years had passed while he was at the Dragon Palace（竜宮城にいる間に何年も何年も過ぎてしまったことに）.
The box had kept his youth（その箱は彼の若さを保っていたのですが）, but now that he had opened it（開けてしまった今）, time caught up with him（時間が彼に追いついてしまいました）.

Taro sat on the beach, old and tired（太郎は年老いて疲れた体で浜辺に座りました）.
He looked out at the sea（彼は海を見つめながら） and thought of the kind turtle, the beautiful palace, and Princess Otohime（親切な亀、美しい宮殿、そして乙姫のことを思い出しました）.
Even though he was now an old man（今や老人となってしまった太郎でしたが）, Taro smiled, remembering the wonderful adventure he had under the sea（海底での素晴らしい冒険を思い出して微笑みました）.

And so, Urashima Taro lived out the rest of his days quietly（そして浦島太郎は、その後静かに残りの人生を送り）, always keeping the memory of the Dragon Palace close to his heart（竜宮城の思い出をいつも心に抱いて過ごしました）.
