「ダンボール」は日英ちゃんぽん。「段」状の「ボール紙」との意味でしょう。「ボール」はballではなく、日本人の耳にboard(板紙) が「ボール」と聞えたのかも。確かに「ボード」より「ボール」の方が実際のboardの発音に近そう。
