It’s a special kind of library created by Junya Dohi. I met him last March at a Shizuoka Ted Talk presentation.
What makes it special? Dohi thought of a library where people could have their own shelf.. They could fill it with books they like and decorate it however they want. They also have the right to take care of the library during the day.
Dohi’s idea is that everyone should have an easy way to express themselves.
He made the first library like this with the help of local people in Yaizu, close to my hometown, around 2020. Now there are about 80 libraries like this around Japan.
When I first heard about his idea, I thought it was great. But I was unsure about owning a shelf or starting a library myself. It seemed like I would need to work with a lot of people, which I find hard.
But then I found out about smaller libraries started by Tod Bol in 2009. He made a little library in memory of his mother. It looked like a mailbox and had some of his mother’s books inside. While making it, he talked to more people than ever before. He believed these libraries could bring people together in his neighborhood.
Many people liked his idea and made their own little libraries at home. This movement spread outside the US, and now there are 175,000 Little Free Libraries in over 120 countries.
I’ve been thinking about making my own little library. What kind of books should I put in it?
Most of the research about these small libraries is in English. Learning English can help you find good information.
