I watched a TV show about Mrs. GREEN APPLE. This band became very popular in Japan quickly. I was amazed by how well the singer could control his voice.
The band’s name made me curious. Why “Green Apple”? I did some research and found interesting facts about these two words.
About the Word “Green”
The word “green” is very old. It comes from a word called “GHRA” that people used about 10,000 years ago. This old word meant “to grow.”

Many English words come from this same old word:

・Grow – this is easy to understand because it looks similar to “green”
・Grass – people probably thought grass was something that grows and lives
・Grand – this means “big” and comes from the idea of “having grown big”
・Green – this was probably the color of growing grass

In French, people use “grand” just like English speakers use “big.”

About the Word “Apple”

The word “apple” is more mysterious. Some people think that long ago, “apple” meant any fruit, not just the red or green fruit we call apple today.
Think about the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. When God told them not to eat a certain fruit, maybe He was talking about fruit in general, not just apples.
I think this makes sense. It would be strange if God said “Don’t eat apples” but left oranges and other fruits okay. It makes more sense if He said “Don’t eat the fruit” without naming exactly which fruit.

My Wish for Mrs. GREEN APPLE

I hope Mrs. GREEN APPLE will have a great future. But I think they should sing more songs in English.
YOASOBI is a good example for them. YOASOBI makes English versions of their Japanese songs and puts them on YouTube often. Mrs. GREEN APPLE could learn from this and reach more people around the world.
The band’s name already connects to English words with deep, old meanings. Maybe they can use English songs to grow even bigger – just like their name suggests!
