How to make a visit to a dentist less painful..

I meditated while having the bad tooth taken care of.

I cannot say I felt no pain. only much less pain.

During my meditation, my internal voice in Japanese must have been silenced temporarily.

In order to feel pain, you need the word “pain” at hand ready to be used. This may be counterintuitive, but closer to the truth.

To fear yet inexistant pain in the future, you need the words like “It’s gonna hurt.”
To reproduce a painful memory, you often need the words like “Oh,, it DID hurt!”

So in the case of a human being it is nearly indispensable to have your verbal thoughts in order to feel pain.

This is why meditation, esp.my version, silencing internal language, must make it very hard, not to say impossible, to feel pain itself..

Thus I came to feel much less pain on the dentist’s chair.

Was that really the case? I don’t want to verify it again very soon..
