Mr. Ohtani is a very famous baseball player. He is popular in Japan and also in the United States. Mr. Mizuhara was Mr. Ohtani’s interpreter. An interpreter helps people who speak different languages understand each other.
Recently, it was reported that Mr. Mizuhara stole a lot of money from Mr. Ohtani’s bank account. He stole about 20 million dollars! This is a huge amount of money. I was very surprised to hear this news. I’m sure many Japanese people were also very surprised.
People say that Mr. Mizuhara stole the money because he has a gambling addiction. This means he likes to gamble and cannot stop, even though it is bad.
I don’t feel good about this explanation. Interpreters have a very important job. They have a lot of power because they control the information between the person they interpret for and the rest of the world. I know this because I was an interpreter once.
Many years ago, I interpreted for Japanese travelers in Sri Lanka. After the welcome ceremony, a local journalist asked me questions. I felt very powerful because I was the only one who could share information between the Japanese travelers and the people of Sri Lanka.
Mr. Mizuhara was the interpreter for Mr. Ohtani, who is very famous. He must have felt very powerful because he controlled the information between Mr. Ohtani and everyone else.
Sometimes, when people have a lot of power, they can misuse or abuse that power. I think this is what happened with Mr. Mizuhara.
Having a lot of power makes it harder to make good choices. It is easy to make bad choices instead. But this does not excuse the bad choice. If you find a lot of money on the street, it is easy to keep it for yourself. But that would be stealing, which is wrong.
I want to explain why Mr. Mizuhara had so much power as an interpreter. But I am not trying to excuse his crime of stealing money. It is always important to have strong moral character and make good choices, no matter how difficult it is.
