Hi everyone,
Today, I want to talk about something interesting: how learning a foreign language might help if you have a brain problem.
I heard about a man who had a brain issue. He couldn’t speak Japanese well, but he could speak English! This made me curious, so I did some research.
I looked at a medical website and found a story about a woman from Spain. After she had a brain problem, she couldn’t speak her first language well. But she could speak Spanish, which she learned later in life!
A doctor thinks this happens because different parts of our brain handle first and second languages. So if one part is hurt, we might still use the other language.
I also asked a brain doctor at a nearby hospital about this. She said it’s possible to use a foreign language if you can’t use your first language after a brain problem. But it depends on which part of the brain is affected and how quickly you get help.
So, if you learn a foreign language and keep practicing it, it might help you communicate if you have a brain problem later. This is not 100% sure, but it’s possible!
Isn’t that amazing? It’s one more good reason to learn a new language!
Take care,
Jiro
