Hello readers,
This summer, I tried something new – I did my car inspection by myself! In Japan, we need to have our cars checked every two or three years. Usually, people ask car shops to do this for them because it seems difficult. But it costs a lot of money and time.
For my third car inspection, I decided to go to the inspection office myself. I wanted to see how it works. Guess what? It was much easier than I thought, and I saved a lot of money!
While I was happy about saving money, I started thinking about the word “economy.” I was curious about where this word comes from. Here’s what I learned:
“Economy” comes from a Greek word “oikos,” which means “house.”
“Oikos” comes from an older word root, what I call DNA, that meant “family group or clan.”
This old word is also found in the English word “village.”
Surprisingly, it’s also in the word “villain”! Long ago, “villain” just meant someone from a village.
Interestingly, the original meaning of “economy” had nothing to do with money!
Because I saved money on my car inspection, I can now buy more English books. That makes me happy!
Have you ever tried doing your car inspection yourself? If not, why not give it a try next time? You might save some money too!
See you next time, Jiro
