Hello, readers,
Today, I want to tell you about how I read a very long book in French.
Have you heard of “Jean Christophe” by Romain Rolland? He’s a French writer who won the Nobel Prize. I tried to read it in French before, but I couldn’t finish it. This was my second try.
You might wonder how I did it. The secret is not trying to be perfect. My old English teacher taught me something important: When reading fast in a foreign language, don’t try to understand everything. Just understanding more than half is good enough.
As I read, I saw many words I didn’t know. But I didn’t stop to look them up. I told myself, “More than half is enough.”
When I found sentences that were hard to understand, I didn’t worry too much. I thought, “More than half is enough.”
Sometimes, I got sleepy while reading. But I didn’t feel bad about it. Not every part of a book is exciting. I reminded myself, “More than half is enough.”
There were parts of the book that talked about history or ideas I didn’t know. I didn’t let that stop me. I said, “More than half is enough.”
I probably understood only about half of the book. But that was okay. It was the best I could do.
Then, I found a great sentence in the book:
“A hero is someone who does what they can. Others don’t even try.”
This made me very happy and gave me more energy to keep reading.
And finally, I finished the book!
Remember, the key is to not try to be perfect. Just try to understand more than half.
This worked for me, and it might work for you too. Why not try to do something you think you can probably do?
See you next time, Jiro
