Dear Friends,
Something scary happened to me! I dropped my cellphone in the kitchen sink – oops! Was I scared? Yes, but I stayed calm. I quickly picked it up from the water and dried it with a towel. Good news – it still works!
While this was happening, I had an interesting thought. I noticed two English words: “emergency” and “submerge.” They look similar, don’t they? Why is that?
I did some research and found something amazing. These words come from a very old word (about 9,000 years old!). This old word was “MEZGO,” which meant “to sink.”
Let me show you some words that come from MEZGO:

・”emerge” means “to come out” (like coming out of water)
・”submerge” means “to go under” (like going under water)
・”immersion” means “to put into” (we use this word when we learn languages by using them a lot)
・”merge” means “to join together” (like when two roads become one)

By the way, “handy” is what some people call a cellphone. Remember – keep your phone handy, that is, away from water!
Take care (of your phone),
Jiro
