Many years ago, I went on a trip to India with a group from Japan. We visited places like Singapore, Burma, Sri Lanka, and India. Our group had some free time in Mumbai (it was called Bombay back then).
While in Mumbai, I saw a big movie theater playing the movie “Gandhi.” This movie was very popular in Japan too. I was curious to see what it was like watching a movie in an Indian theater.
When I went inside, the theater was almost full of people. Their skin was a light brown color and they had big eyes. There were no subtitles on the screen – no Hindi and no English words! I thought this was very strange because in Japan, we always have subtitles for movies that are in other languages.
But then something amazing happened. Suddenly, everyone in the audience started laughing really loudly! They did this a couple times during the movie. I was the only one not laughing because I didn’t understand what was happening. I was so surprised that all these Indian people could understand the English movie without any subtitles!
These days, I remember that experience whenever people talk about India’s growing economy. India’s people have a big advantage because so many of them understand English well. English is one of the most important languages for business and communication nowadays.
In Japan, we want to learn English so we can enjoy foreign movies without subtitles. But the Indians could already do that 50 years ago!
