I had stomach problems recently. The doctor said I could only drink clear liquids for a while. This made me think about the word “diet.” Sometimes problems can lead to new understandings.
I learned two interesting things. First, the word “diet” comes from an old language root that means “day” or “light.” It is related to words like “diary,” “dial,” and “dine.”
A diary is written each day.
A dial was an ancient clock that showed the time of day.
A diet tells you what to eat during the day.
We dine by eating the main meal of the day.
These words are connected because they involve the concept of “day.”
I feel excited when I find out unexpected relatedness, especially between well-known words like those above. In fact, I was so excited that I forgot about my minor stomach trouble.
Second, I found a new way to follow my diet without giving up enjoyable foods, about which I will tell you next time.
So until then, bye!
Jiro
