Great News from Kyoto!
Kyoto International High School won the big summer baseball tournament! This is amazing because this school started as a school for Korean people living in Japan.
I looked at how three different newspapers wrote about this news. Each newspaper said something different in their headlines:
Korean Herald: “Korean-ethnic high school wins big Japanese baseball tournament”
Asahi: “International school from Kyoto wins Koshien title”
Japan Times: Underdog Kyoto International High School wins Summer Koshien crown
Isn’t it interesting how different these headlines are? They focus on different things:
Korean background
International nature
Unexpected win (,underdog meaning unexpected winner)
Some people are upset that the school’s song is in Korean. They say a Japanese school should have a Japanese song. I don’t agree with this. Here’s why:
Japan has one official language, but some countries have many. For example, Canada has two (English and French) and India has more than 20! So, a country doesn’t need to have just one language.
Some schools in Japan have English songs. If Korean songs are bad, are English songs bad too? That doesn’t make sense.
I think students should be able to sing their school song in any language they want.
English newspapers are fun to read. Their headlines can be very interesting. When you see big news, why not look at English newspapers too?
