Recently, Japanese baseball star Shohei Ohtani did something amazing. He hit 50 home runs and stole 50 bases in one season! This is very special because it’s hard to be both strong (to hit home runs) and fast (to steal bases).

When I heard about “50,” I became interested in numbers like 50, 15, and 5. I found some fun facts about these numbers:

  1. The word “five” is very old! About 9,000 years ago, people said “PENKWE.” Many English and Indian words come from this old word.
  2. “Fifteen” means “five plus ten.” That’s why it has “-teen” at the end. (Just like thirteen, fourteen, etc.)
  3. “Fifty” means “five tens.” The “-ty” means “groups of ten.”
  4. The words “fist” and “finger” come from the same old word “PENKWE.” Think about it – how many fingers do you have on one hand?
  5. The Pentagon (America’s defense building) is called this because it has five sides.
  6. Here’s something funny: The ancient city Pompeii got its name because it was “five areas joined together.” I was surprised to find that my neighborhood also has five areas joined together – it’s like a mini Pompeii!

Learning English can be fun when you find interesting connections like these. Let’s celebrate with a high five!
