Learning English: More Than Just Words
One day, I visited the public library. A librarian helped me check out a book, but something felt strange. She gave me all the right information, but our conversation felt cold. She answered my questions, but didn’t seem interested in talking.
Then I remembered a different experience at a music festival. A staff member came up to our choir and said something unexpected: “It’s my birthday today. What is the name of the new character?”
At first, this might sound confusing! But we knew something special about this staff member – they were part of a team that includes people with different ways of communicating. So instead of feeling confused, we understood they were excited and happy.
This made me think about communication. It’s not just about saying the right words – it’s about connecting with people.
Learning English: Feel the Feelings!
When you learn English, don’t just focus on grammar and vocabulary. Pay attention to feelings too!
Let’s take a simple phrase: “How far is it to the station?”
This sentence can mean different things depending on how you feel:
・If you’re tired from walking a long time, you might sound frustrated
・If you’re almost at your destination, you might sound relieved
・If you’re revisiting an old place, you might sound nostalgic
You might say this to:
・A stranger you need help from
・Someone you want to start a conversation with
・A friend who knows the area
The magic of language is in the feelings behind the words.
So, when you learn English, don’t just learn words. Learn how to express your emotions. Enjoy the process, and you’ll improve faster!
See you next time, Jiro
