Hi! I heard some surprising news recently, and I want to share it with you. The United Nations (UN) told the Japanese government that they should not treat children with challenges unfairly when it comes to getting an education. More than a hundred parents and their challenged children were at the UN meeting when they said this.
Have you ever been called a bad name or felt like you did something wrong?
When I read this news, I was really shocked. I used to be a teacher, and I never thought that challenged children were being treated unfairly. In fact, I thought that having special classes for these children, where they could get the help they needed, was a good thing. I realized I was wrong.
I believe all Japanese people, including me, need to take this seriously. Sometimes, we don’t speak up for our rights because we want to be polite and considerate of others. But we need to stand up for our rights without fear.
There’s one more thing I want to talk about. This idea of including challenged children in regular classes is not new. Many families have been doing this for a long time. When a child with challenges is born in a family, most families try to raise them alongside their siblings, don’t they?
What about other countries? I’m really curious to learn more and do some research on this topic.
