Do you know what Francis Bacon meant when he said, “Knowledge is power”? I didn’t either, so I was curious to understand the context of this famous expression.
Unfortunately, the original Latin text in which he first wrote this phrase is not easily accessible. I was only able to find an English version translated from the sixteenth-century Latin text. To seek assistance, I turned to ChatGPT with the hope of translating the English version back into the Latin used during that era.
However, ChatGPT seemed to struggle after a few attempts, citing the complexity of Latin with its numerous synonyms and implications. I advised ChatGPT not to push too hard and explained that I was looking for a Latin translation that a proficient Latin student would present to their professor for review and evaluation. This approach worked well, and I eventually received a Latin translation that resembled the original passage reasonably closely.
Today’s lesson is clear: when interacting with ChatGPT, it’s essential to stay flexible and guide ChatGPT toward tasks it can manage based on the situation.
P.S. Francis Bacon originally intended “Knowledge is power” to mean that knowledge embodies the same power as that possessed by God, as he specified in Meditationes Sacrae (1597).
