Dear readers,

You may have heard the shocking news about Donald Trump, a US presidential candidate, being shot at.

Something else surprised me too. In Japan, news reports didn’t mention the name of the person who died from a stray bullet. But American news did share this information.

The Japan Times only said the victim’s age. The Washington Post told us more:
◯His name
◯He was a volunteer staff member
◯He had two children
If the person who died was Japanese, Japanese news would have said their name.
This way of reporting in Japan might make people think that non-Japanese lives don’t matter as much. This isn’t right.
In America, TV shows usually say the names of people they talk to. Also, many American news articles list the names of all the writers at the end. This doesn’t happen much in Japan.
Why are Japanese people so careful about names? Are they afraid of standing out?
I think this isn’t good. If someone asks to interview you, it’s a chance to share your thoughts. Don’t be afraid to use your name, unless you have a good reason not to.
Take care,
Jiro
