Dangerous? Kindness? Beauty? — A Simple English Quiz

Here is a quiz for you!

Which is correct in English?

この川は危険だ。
① This river is dangerous.
② This river is danger.

The answer is ①.

However, many Japanese students choose ②. This is probably because the Japanese sentence looks like “This river is danger.”

But in English, a literal translation does not work.

👉 Rule:
When you describe something that can hurt people, you must use an adjective (dangerous), not a noun (danger).
The noun “danger” means only an abstract idea.

Now look at this sentence:

He is in danger.

This means he may be hurt.
You can also say:

He is out of danger. (= He is safe now.)

This expression reminds me of something.
In the 1980s, after the shooting of President Ronald Reagan, an American high school exchange student I knew was very worried.
So I told him,
“He is out of danger.”

He looked relieved right away.
Simple English can really help people.

Next quiz!
彼女は親切だ。
① She is kind.
② She is kindness.

The answer is ①.

Again, many students choose ② because of direct translation.

👉 Use an adjective (kind) to describe a person.
However, there is a special expression:

She is kindness itself.
This is correct and natural.
(Be careful: herself is wrong here.)

Last quiz!

彼女は美人だ。
① She is beautiful.
② She is beauty.

The answer is ①.

But sometimes, ② can be used in special situations.

For example:

She is beauty itself.

This sounds poetic and strong. It is not normal daily English.

👉 Important point:
Expressions like “She is beauty” or “This river is danger” work only when used intentionally for special effect.
If not, people may think your English is just incorrect.

So, what should you do?
✔ Use correct grammar first.
✔ Use special expressions only when you understand them very well.

One more useful expression:

She is a beauty.

This is very common and natural.
It means “She is a beautiful woman.”
